Neo-Corporatism and Austerity

Good morning austerity readers. This week we have another presentation from our second workshop, now, on social partnerships. Dr. Stephen McBride and James Watson from McMaster University outline their research so far into the effect of liberalisation reforms in economies and states on the influence of labour. A significant mechanism through which labour had influence in social and economic outcomes was through social partnership or dialogue institutions which brought together labour, employers, and sometimes the state. These institutions were more prevalent in coordinated market economies in Europe, but McBride & Watson hypothesize that neoliberal and austerity conditions have led to their decline. This presentation is an examination of the conditions and literature on the topic for the three cases (Spain, Denmark, and Ireland) and the analysis framework going forward.
