Dr. E. P. Sanders (1937–2022).

Sanders joined McMaster University in 1966, after completing his PhD at Union Theological Seminary. He taught at McMaster University from 1966-1984, where he published The Tendencies of the Synoptic Tradition, and the ground-breaking work, Paul and Palestinian Judaism. Together with fellow McMaster faculty members, Al Baumgarten, Alan Mendelson, and Ben Meyer, Sanders won a major Canadian Council grant, which resulted in the three-volume project, Jewish and Christian Self-Definition. While at McMaster, he supervised thirteen doctoral students and six master’s students.

 

In 1984, he left McMaster University to become Dean Ireland's Professor of the Exegesis of Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford. In 1990, he left Oxford for Duke University, where he taught until his retirement in 2005.

 

He was the author of twelve books and co-editor of three volumes, a fellow of the British Academy, and held a Doctor of Letters from the University of Oxford and an honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki. In 1990 he won the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for the best book on religion, Jesus and Judaism (1985).

 

He is widely considered the most important scholar of New Testament of the last fifty, if not hundred, years. Condolences to his family and loved ones as they mourn his passing.
