CRDCN National Policy Challenge

Hey graduate students!

Are you passionate about Canadian public policy? Do you love data, and dream about statistics? Then, this competition is for you!

What is it?
A competition designed to encourage Canadian graduate students to share their policy ideas and to promote the use of confidential microdata in developing innovative, evidence-driven policy solutions.

Why you should apply
• Analyze a policy issue of your own choosing with exclusive Statistics Canada data, at your nearest Research Data Centre (RDC).
• Attend a 1-day special event in Ottawa on June 11, 2019 and present your results to a distinguished panel of judges.
• Get unique SAS training and insights from highly qualified mentors.
• Win one of the prizes that will be awarded to the top three presentations.

How to apply?
• Submit a research proposal online, individually or as a team, by October 1st.

New data sets at the RDC

In the upcoming weeks we will be receiving new data sets and surveys at the McMaster Research Data Centre. Please see the information below. Researchers interested in accessing these data sets are encouraged to submit proposals!

The CCHS collects information on health status, health care use and determinants of health. It relies upon a large sample of respondents and is designed to provide reliable estimates at the regional level. The rapid response component is offered to organizations interested in national estimates on an emerging or specific issue related to the population's health. Provincial estimates may also be yielded from a rapid response however they may be of limited quality.

The 2017 CCHS Rapid Response is now available. The content of this rapid response deals with potential barriers respondents may face regarding engagement in physical activity. This module does not measure the level or duration of physical activity, rather, it gauges possible environmental and perceptual influences related to participation in physical activity.

This module collected data about:

• respondent environments;
• the presence of recreational facilities in the respondent's neighbourhood;
• the respondent's perceptions of physical activity;
• confidence in ability to be physically active;
• the time and energy required for physical activity;
• and more.
